Brief history on colt 38 super:
Following World War II, the United States government conducted a trial to identify a lighter successor for the M1911 pistol that would be delivered to officers. The pistol that would eventually be given the moniker 38 super colt was the candidate submitted by Colt’s Manufacturing Company in the trial. The requirements for the handgun, which were given in 1949, were that it had to have a chamber that was chambered for 9 mm Parabellum, that it must not be longer than 7 inches, and that it could not weigh more than 25 ounces.

Browning Hi-Power models manufactured by Canada’s Inglis and Belgium’s Fabrique Nationale, in addition to Smith & Wesson’s S&W Model 39, were considered to be candidates. Colt entered a modified version of their M1911 pistol that was chambered for 9 mm Parabellum, with a frame made of aluminum alloy, a short barrel measuring 4.25 inches, and a magazine that held 9 rounds of ammunition.

Colt began putting its candidate into regular production in the year 1950. It was the first Colt handgun to be originally chambered in 9 mm Parabellum and the first large frame pistol with an aluminum frame to be produced in significant quantities. Chamberings of.45 ACP and.38 Super were among those produced during the first year of manufacturing.
